Session Spotlight: Studio Photos with Pet Connect Rescue!
Being able to photograph rescue dogs and provide photos for their profiles, brings me joy. I recently connected with Pet Connect Rescue and welcomed five of their wonderful adoptable dogs into the studio in Ashburn, Virginia.
Meeting the Dogs: Five Unique Personalities
As soon as each dog arrived throughout the day, it became clear that each one had their own approach to this new experience. Some were a little shy, hanging back and cautiously sniffing their surroundings, while others were ready to jump right in, tails wagging and full of curiosity. Each one had their own personality, and getting to know them was a lot of fun.
For the more cautious pups, I knew patience would be key. Building trust with a rescue dog can take time, and I’m always happy to move at their pace. Slowly, we started to build that bond—whether through treats, gentle encouragement, or simply allowing them space to explore until they felt comfortable. I explained to each foster parent how the session would work and how I would take my time letting the dogs warm up to the studio.
Warming Up: The First Few Minutes
One of the things I’ve learned from working with dogs is that they often need a little extra time to warm up to new environments, especially in a studio setting where lights, props, and cameras can be unfamiliar. I always take a patient approach at the start, letting them investigate the space and get used to me, my wonderful assistant, and all the studio has to offer.
Some of the dogs needed extra reassurance, so I spent time on the floor with them, offering treats and letting them approach me when they felt ready. I do this with all the dogs I photograph. I want a session to be a fun experience for each of my furry guests.

Capturing Their Unique Spirits
Once each dog began to get comfortable with the studio, I started getting them used to the camera and the flashes. Once we acclimated them to everything, it was time for their photoshoots.
Each dog was a perfect model—whether it was Mossy bounding across the studio with ears flying, posing proudly for the camera, or Remi offering his sweet, soulful eyes that tell you more than words ever could.
Remi’s soulful eyes will melt any heart out there.
Drew had the most perfect head tilt that brought a smile to everyone’s face. And the dogs like Belinda and Ridley? Even though they were a bit shy and needed some extra time and space, they were enjoying the treats and the perks of being a supermodel.
Drew is rocking the head tilt and is quite a superstar in front of the camera.
It’s these little quirks and traits that make photographing rescue dogs such a delight. They may come from difficult pasts, but their capacity for joy and trust never ceases to amaze me.
Mossy was the ham of the bunch and ready for anything!
The Beauty of Rescue Dogs
Rescue dogs may take a little extra time to settle in, but the bond you create with them is incredibly rewarding. Lance and Lili were each adopted from a rescue and I could not imagine my life without them being in it. Lance may no longer be here, but he is the reason why I wanted to photograph these dogs. He was fortunate enough to be saved from a horrible experience and lived out his days full of love and joy. I want this for every rescue dog, to experience unconditional love.
Photographing rescue dogs is a way for me to honor Lance’s memory. Each of them brought something special to the session, from the playful antics of Mossy to Belinda’s quiet sweetness. Whether it’s their first time in front of the camera or they’re seasoned pros, every rescue dog deserves to have their story told, and we are happy to tell their stories.
Belinda is a sweet, joyful and playful girl looking for her forever home.
So, the next time you consider bringing your rescue dog in for a photo session, know that we’ll take the time to make them feel safe, happy, and right at home. Because every dog—no matter their past—deserves their moment to shine.
Belinda, Drew, Mossy, Remi, and Ridley are all available for adoption through Pet Connect Rescue. Check them out to find out how they can be a part of your family. Every dog deserves to be a part of a happy home.
